On March 23, 2002, the number of lawyers in Korea reached 5,000 and dramatic changes have been taking place in the proportion of gender, age and practice area, etc. In 2004 lawyers who have no experience as a judge or a prosecutor have already increased to 72 percent of all lawyers.
The number of female lawyers increased to 462 and lawyers in their thirties and forties became the majority.
Since the amended Lawyers Act introduced a law firm system on December 31, 1982, the number of law firms has increased to 258 in 2004.
It is becoming common to organize a joint law office or partnership, and law offices have become larger and specialized in the fields such as international trade, patent, litigation, etc. In some cases a single law firm conducts practices in various areas described above. |
