31stSeoul IDRC LECTURE SERIES:International Sports Arbitration – Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games and beyond

Tuesday 21 November 2017

Less than three months before the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang our event will give an overview on the work of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), current challenges in international sports arbitration and an insight into the discussion surrounding the Russian team's alleged involvement in the manipulation of doping samples at the Sochi games.

CAS sent more than 20 international arbitrators to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The "CAS ad hoc Division" and the "CAS Anti-doping Division" decided on 34 cases, ensuring that legal disputes could be resolved quickly. In its work CAS also has to deal with a lack of experience in disciplinary bodies as well as administrative deficiencies in many national and international sporting organizations.

Speakers

·        Sylvia Schenk is a former City Counsellor for Legal Affairs and Sport in Frankfurt on Main (1989 – 2001). She is a lawyer specialized in Compliance and Sports Law, serving as an arbitrator at CAS in Lausanne since 2007. As a former athlete, having run the 800m at the Olympic Games in Munich 1972, Sylvia has been engaged as a volunteer in national and international sport since 1975. She has been the Senior Advisor for Sport at Transparency International (2006 – 2014) and now chairs the Working Group Sport of TI's German chapter.

·        Mike McClure is Chief Representative of the Herbert Smith Freehills Seoul office and also heads the dispute resolution department in Seoul. He is an English qualified solicitor advocate with extensive experience advising on international arbitration. While his practice focuses mainly on commercial and investment arbitration disputes, he has in the past advised also on sports related matters. Mike will offer a general arbitrator's perspective on the issue of sports arbitration and draw out some of the differences to commercial arbitration.
